Selisseo® – Organic Selenium

Selisseo® Organic Selenium for Dairy Cows

Selisseo® is a highly bioavailable source of organic selenium for dairy cows, beef cattle, sheep and goats.

It provides 100% hydroxy-selenomethionine (OH-SeMet), helping build selenium reserves that support antioxidant defence, immune function, reproduction and animal performance.

Agvance is the exclusive New Zealand supplier of Selisseo®.

Why does selenium form matter?

Not all selenium sources are used by the animal in the same way.

Selisseo® – Organic Selenium supplies selenium as hydroxy-selenomethionine. Once absorbed, it can be used to produce selenoproteins or stored in body tissues for later use.

Research has found higher selenium concentrations in plasma, milk, colostrum and body tissues with hydroxy-selenomethionine compared with sodium selenite.

This stored selenium can be particularly useful when demand increases.

Support when cows are under pressure

Calving, early lactation and heat stress can all increase oxidative stress.

Research in dairy cows has linked hydroxy-selenomethionine supplementation with higher selenium concentrations in plasma and milk and improvements in antioxidant measures.

Under controlled heat-stress conditions, cows receiving hydroxy-selenomethionine also maintained antioxidant activity and tended to produce more milk than cows receiving sodium selenite.

More than dairy

Selisseo® can also be used across beef, sheep and goat systems.

In beef cattle, research has reported higher blood and meat selenium concentrations and differences in meat-quality measures.

In sheep and goats, selenium supplementation can be particularly relevant where animals are grazing selenium-deficient soils. Research has reported greater selenium transfer into milk, colostrum and newborn animals with hydroxy-selenomethionine compared with sodium selenite.

What the research shows

  • A study in 50 mid-lactation dairy cows compared sodium selenite with hydroxy-selenomethionine (HMSeBA). HMSeBA increased selenium concentrations in milk and plasma and improved measures of antioxidant status, including glutathione peroxidase and superoxide dismutase activity. (DOI: 10.3168/jds.2017-12610)
  • A controlled heat-stress study involving eight mid-lactation Holstein cows compared HMSeBA with sodium selenite at the same selenium inclusion rate. Cows receiving HMSeBA had higher selenium concentrations in serum and milk, maintained antioxidant activity during heat stress and tended to have higher milk production. (DOI: 10.3168/jds.2018-14974)
  • A study involving 42 pregnant dairy heifers compared an unsupplemented diet, sodium selenite and HMSeBA during the final eight weeks of pregnancy. HMSeBA produced the highest selenium status in the heifers and their newborn calves, including greater calf plasma selenium concentration. (DOI: 10.3168/jds.2018-16065)
  • A lamb study examined hydroxy-selenomethionine alongside vitamin E in animals fed a high-concentrate diet. The treatment increased glutathione peroxidase activity and was associated with measures of antioxidant capacity and meat stability. (DOI: 10.3390/antiox9121298)
  • A study in young Charolais bulls compared sodium selenite, selenium yeast and hydroxy-selenomethionine during the finishing period. Hydroxy-selenomethionine increased meat selenium concentration and was associated with lower drip loss and lipid oxidation after storage, as well as differences in tenderness and meat lightness. (DOI: 10.3390/antiox10040596)
Limits

These studies examine hydroxy-selenomethionine, the organic selenium form supplied by Selisseo, across dairy cattle, beef cattle and lambs. Study design, selenium dose, livestock class and measured outcomes differ between trials.

Study details and links

What was tested

Research on hydroxy-selenomethionine supplementation in lactating dairy cows, pregnant dairy heifers, beef cattle and lambs. Studies compared hydroxy-selenomethionine with inorganic sodium selenite, selenium yeast or unsupplemented diets, including research conducted during heat stress, late pregnancy and the beef finishing period.

Selenium concentrations in plasma, serum, milk, calves and meat, glutathione peroxidase and other antioxidant measures, milk production, oxidative-stress responses, calf selenium status and meat-quality measures including drip loss, lipid oxidation, tenderness and colour.

The research provides direct evidence for hydroxy-selenomethionine across several ruminant production systems, but results from one livestock class or production stage should not automatically be applied to another.

Frequently asked questions

Q. What is Selisseo®?

A. Selisseo® is an organic selenium source containing hydroxy-selenomethionine. It supplies selenium in a form that can be used immediately or stored in body tissues for later use.

A. Sodium selenite is an inorganic selenium source. Selisseo® supplies hydroxy-selenomethionine, which research has shown can produce higher selenium concentrations in plasma, milk and body tissues.

A. Selenium demand can become more relevant around calving, early lactation and periods of environmental stress. Adequate selenium supports antioxidant and immune function during these periods.

A. Selisseo® should form part of the herd’s wider mineral programme. The right inclusion rate depends on dietary selenium supply and the needs of the herd. Your Agvance Consultant can help set an appropriate programme.
