Novasil Plus

Protect your herd from hidden feed toxins

Conserved crops and grains can often contain moulds that produce aflatoxins, highly toxic compounds that threaten herd health and performance by targeting the liver. Aflatoxins are stable and resistant to heat, cold and light, meaning they can withstand normal processing and continue to live in feed.

Novasil Plus offers an effective, proven way to reduce this risk. Acting like a chemical sponge, it binds harmful mycotoxins in the digestive tract, preventing them from entering the bloodstream and damaging organs like the liver.

Scientifically-proven benefits and features:

  • Binds and neutralises aflatoxins in feed
  • Safe for all livestock species
  • Reduces toxin-related health issues, even at dietary aflatoxin levels up to 7,500ppb
  • Doesn’t interfere with trace element absorption
  • Easy to blend into feed, silos or mixer wagons
  • Cost-effective, year-round protection for animal health

Why use a mycotoxin binder?

Mycotoxins, like aflatoxin, are invisible threats in many feeds, and once formed, they can’t be destroyed through normal processing. Even small amounts can hurt animal health, reduce feed intake and affect milk production.

Adding Novasil Plus is a simple, cost-effective way to protect cows from these ongoing risks and maintain performance throughout the year.

Novasil Plus daily dose rate

  • 2kg per tonne of feed
  • 10–14g per cow per day (depending on body weight)

Product comes in 25kg bags. Mineral levels can be custom-blended to herd requirements.

What the research shows

  • A lactating dairy cow study found that adding NovaSil Plus calcium montmorillonite clay to aflatoxin-contaminated diets reduced aflatoxin M1 in milk by 55% at the lower inclusion rate and 68% at the higher inclusion rate, without changing dry matter intake, milk yield, milk composition, vitamin A or riboflavin. (DOI: 10.1016/j.anifeedsci.2016.02.014)
  • An early to mid-lactation dairy cow study found that NovasilPlus, included at 0.56% of diet dry matter, reduced aflatoxin M1 concentrations in milk when cows were fed aflatoxin B1-contaminated diets. (DOI: 10.3168/jds.2009-2031)
  • A NovaSil clay review found that NovaSil binds aflatoxins with high affinity and capacity in the gastrointestinal tract, reducing toxin bioavailability across animal and human studies without interfering with measured vitamin and micronutrient use. (DOI: 10.1007/s42860-019-0008-x)
Limits

Two of these studies directly tested NovaSil Plus or NovasilPlus in lactating dairy cows challenged with aflatoxin-contaminated diets. The review covers NovaSil clay research more broadly across species and should not be treated as a direct Agvance Novasil Plus product trial.

What was tested

Research on NovaSil Plus calcium montmorillonite clay, NovasilPlus and NovaSil clay as dietary aflatoxin binders, including dairy cow studies using aflatoxin B1-contaminated feed and wider work on aflatoxin enterosorption.

Aflatoxin M1 concentration in milk, aflatoxin transfer from feed to milk, dry matter intake, milk yield, milk composition, milk quality, vitamin A, riboflavin, aflatoxin bioavailability and micronutrient use.

The research supports the use of selected clay-based binders for reducing aflatoxin exposure, especially aflatoxin M1 transfer into milk, but results depend on binder type, inclusion rate, diet, contamination level and management. NovaSil Plus should be used as part of a wider feed quality and mycotoxin risk management plan.
