What’s inside?

Bentonite clay

Naturally binds toxins and supports firmer manure, helping calves manage scours and digestive upset. Bentonite is known for its absorptive power and is widely used to support gut function in livestock.

Probiotic

A dual-strain probiotic that helps support microbial balance in the gut and is useful after antibiotic use, scours, or transport stress. Calf Protect-mineral-product-Agvance

Why choose Calf Protect?

  • Firm up loose manure – bentonite helps bind moisture
  • Support gut flora – probiotic helps restore balance after stress or illness
  • Mixes easily – feed through milk, milk replacer, or electrolyte
  • Simple and affordable – no complicated blends or unnecessary extras

What the research shows

  • A meta-analysis of randomised calf trials found that lactic acid bacteria supplementation reduced diarrhoea incidence in young calves, with stronger effects in studies using whole milk and multistrain probiotic products. (DOI: 10.1016/j.rvsc.2011.05.001
  • A randomised clinical trial in dairy calves with diarrhoea found that a multispecies probiotic and yeast bolus shortened the duration of diarrhoea when given at the onset of scours, though the wider clinical and economic value still needed more study. (DOI: 10.3168/jds.2018-15793)
  • A review of clay minerals in animal nutrition reported that kaolins and smectites are commonly used for gastrointestinal disturbances, particularly diarrhoea, because of their adsorptive properties and ability to bind unwanted compounds in the gut. (DOI: 10.1016/j.clay.2011.01.005)
Limits

These studies test probiotic supplementation and clay-based gut support approaches, not this specific Agvance product or its exact bentonite and probiotic combination.

What was tested

Research on gut-support strategies for young calves, including a meta-analysis of lactic acid bacteria supplementation, a randomised diarrhoea-treatment trial using a multispecies probiotic and yeast bolus, and a review of clay minerals used for gastrointestinal support in livestock.

Diarrhoea incidence, diarrhoea duration, faecal microbial balance, and the reported gastrointestinal actions and uses of clay minerals in animal feeding and veterinary settings.

  • The evidence supports ingredient categories and gut-support strategies relevant to scouring calves, not Calf Protect as a branded product on its own.
  • Results can vary with the cause and severity of diarrhoea, timing of use, colostrum management, hydration and electrolyte support, milk-feeding programme, and overall calf health status.
