What the research shows

  • A Holstein cow study found that supplementing manganese, zinc and copper as sulphate, glycine or methionine salts improved dry matter intake, digestibility, colostrum and milk performance, milk somatic cell count, blood zinc and manganese and selected immunity measures. (DOI: 10.1016/j.aninu.2019.08.003)
  • A dairy cow study found that partly replacing sulphate sources of zinc, copper and manganese with organic trace minerals during the dry period and lactation increased colostrum immunoglobulins and milk fat, and reduced calf mortality at calving in multiparous cows. (DOI: 10.1016/j.anifeedsci.2011.01.010)
  • A transition cow study found that selenium with vitamin E improved immune function, reproductive performance and milk yield, while a copper, zinc and manganese complex improved milk yield and energy regulation through antioxidant capacity and immune function. (DOI: 10.3390/vetsci10030225)
Limits

These studies examine dairy cow trace mineral supplementation, including manganese, zinc, copper, selenium and vitamin E, and compare organic, complexed and inorganic mineral sources. They do not test DCM Plus Feed itself.

Study details and links

What was tested

Research on mineral supplementation in dairy cows, including manganese, zinc, copper and selenium, with a focus on organic mineral sources, complexed minerals and sulphate mineral sources. Research also assessed mineral support during the dry period, transition period and early lactation.

Dry matter intake, dry matter digestibility, colostrum and milk performance, milk fat, milk somatic cell count, blood mineral status, antioxidant capacity, immunoglobulins, immune function, reproductive performance, energy regulation and calf outcomes at calving.

The research supports wider dairy cow mineral nutrition principles related to trace mineral supplementation, mineral source, antioxidant status, immune function and production measures, but it should not be presented as a direct product trial for DCM Plus Feed.
