What the research shows

  • A 2025 meta-analysis of controlled dairy calf studies found that probiotic supplementation increased total dry matter intake, starter intake and average daily gain overall, although responses differed by probiotic type and study design. (DOI: 10.3168/jds.2025-26540)
  • A large randomised dairy calf study found that feeding yeast culture improved faecal scores, reduced days with watery faeces, lowered the incidence of fever and diarrhoea, and reduced morbidity and mortality risk during the preweaning period. (DOI: 10.3168/jds.2007-0582)
  • A review of clay minerals used in animal feeding reported that clays are commonly included for their capacity to bind feed contaminants such as mycotoxins and to interact with the gastrointestinal environment, while noting that these effects depend on clay type and can also influence nutrient or drug availability. (DOI: 10.3389/fvets.2022.889612)
Limits

These studies assess probiotic supplementation, yeast culture, and clay-based gut-support strategies, not this specific Agvance product or its exact prebiotic, probiotic, yeast, trace element and bentonite formulation.

What was tested

Research on calf gut health support and early performance, including a meta-analysis of probiotic supplementation in dairy calves, a randomised yeast culture trial in pre-weaned calves, and a review of clay minerals used as feed additives for gastrointestinal and toxin-binding purposes.

Dry matter intake, starter intake, average daily gain, faecal consistency, days with watery faeces, fever and diarrhoea incidence, morbidity and mortality risk, and the reported gastrointestinal and contaminant-binding actions of clay minerals in animal feeding.

  • The evidence supports ingredient categories and gut-support approaches relevant to young calves, not Calf Protect Plus as a branded product on its own.
  • Results can vary with pathogen challenge, colostrum quality and timing, milk-feeding system, hygiene, housing conditions, hydration and electrolyte support, overall trace element status, and the dose and duration of supplementation.
