Optiprill has been specifically designed to meet the mineral nutrition and supplement needs of the cow at every level with combinations to suit production level, feed mineral levels, specific health challenges and stage of lactation.

A well-balanced early to late lactation mineral supplement. Containing good levels of calcium, magnesium, sodium and trace minerals incorporated into a prill using a clever combination of additives and machinery, finished with a layer of molasses to aid in palatability. Optiprill Performance is perfectly suited to farmers wanting to replace lime/mag dusting and magnesium/trace minerals in water.

Get the science behind Optiprill mineral supplementation

Optiprill is the result of many years of research, machinery development, and testing. When farmers told us they wanted a better alternative to dusting that would decrease waste, we decided to create a mineral supplement fed through the inline shed feeding system to increase dosing consistency, efficiency, and cost-effectiveness.

We went on a global search for the best quality mineral supplements that could be manufactured into a strong and great-tasting prill. We weren’t interested in the status quo, we’d set our sights on creating a product to deliver measurable, improved mineral performance to the cow while removing the hassle, cost, and waste of dusting. Our search led us to products that, when tested, showed better performance than any other market equivalent.

Independent and in-house test results gave us the confidence to release Optiprill to the New Zealand market as a superior, complete mineral supplement staple.

Optiprill Springer Safe SI is great for South Island springers, and they love it.

What the research shows

  • A lactating Holstein cow study under mild heat stress found that a higher dietary cation-anion difference, adjusted using sodium acetate, improved blood acid-base balance and increased milk fat percentage and milk fat yield. (DOI: 10.3168/jds.2024-25225)
  • A mid-lactation Holstein cow study found that magnesium source and ruminal buffer affected dry matter intake, feed efficiency, blood acid-base measures, urinary pH, plasma magnesium and calcium and magnesium balance measures, while milk yield was not changed. (DOI: 10.3168/jds.2022-22583)
  • A dairy cow study found that partly replacing inorganic zinc, manganese, copper and cobalt with organic forms increased milk production at week 14 after calving, while dry matter intake, health events, follicular measures, embryo quality and liver trace mineral concentrations were not changed. (DOI: 10.2527/jas.2010-3055)
Limits

These studies examine dietary cation-anion difference, sodium supply, magnesium source, ruminal buffer, calcium and magnesium balance and trace mineral source in lactating dairy cows. They do not test OptiPrill Performance itself.

Study details and links

What was tested

Dairy cow research covering higher and lower dietary cation-anion difference, sodium acetate, calcium-magnesium carbonate buffer, magnesium oxide, calcium-magnesium hydroxide, sodium sesquicarbonate buffer and organic versus inorganic zinc, manganese, copper and cobalt supplementation.

Milk yield, milk fat percentage, milk fat yield, dry matter intake, feed efficiency, rumen pH, ruminal fermentation, blood acid-base balance, urinary pH, plasma magnesium, calcium and magnesium balance, health events, follicular measures, embryo quality, liver trace mineral concentrations and selected reproductive measures.

  • The research supports broader lactation mineral nutrition principles for calcium, magnesium, sodium and trace minerals, but it should not be read as a direct product trial for OptiPrill Performance.
