Facial Eczema
What is it?
Facial eczema is caused by ingestion of Pithomyces chartarum spores, which produce toxins that damage cows’ livers, leading to sunlight sensitivity. It thrives in warm, humid conditions, reducing milk production and causing liver damage.
Symptoms
- Drop in milk production
- Restlessness, seeking shade, licking udders or flanks
- Reddened or peeling skin
- Kicking cups
- Jaundice or photosensitisation
