Iodine is essential for the thyroid gland to produce the hormones need to accelerate reactions in most organs, thereby increasing metabolic rate and accelerating growth.

Premium Iodocow contains 8% iodine-soluble salt, promoting superior animal health and optimal immunity. Dosing methods are flexible, and because it’s fully soluble, it can be dosed through the pump or trough.

Just 0.1g of Iodocow delivers 12mg of iodine per cow per day. This is a vet-only product and must be purchased through your local vet.

Give your cows the increased energy they need in the lead-up to mating and improve first-round in-calf rates.

What the research shows

  • A New Zealand pasture-based dairy study found that iodine supplementation lifted milk iodine concentrations, although it did not significantly change milk, milkfat or milk protein yield where pasture iodine appeared adequate. (DOI: 10.1080/00480169.2005.36462)
  • A dairy cow study found that dietary iodine supplementation influenced gene expression linked with immune response and oxidative stress, reduced somatic cell count and lifted milk iodine concentration, without changing milk composition. (DOI: 10.3390/ani9110866)
  • A short-term dairy cow study found that supplemental iodine changed serum and milk iodine concentrations, while canola meal reduced iodine transfer into milk, showing that dietary iodine response can be influenced by feed type and iodine antagonists. (DOI: 10.3168/jds.2014-9209)
  • A prepartum dairy cow study found that high iodine supplementation increased calf iodine status at birth and 24 hours of age, but did not improve IgG absorption or calf health measures, and supplementation above minimum requirements was unnecessary for adequate calf iodine status. (DOI: 10.3168/jds.2013-7867)

What was tested

Research on iodine supplementation in dairy cows, including pasture-based iodine supplementation, dietary iodine supplementation, prepartum iodine supplementation and the effect of feed ingredients that can influence iodine transfer.

Milk iodine concentration, milk yield, milkfat and milk protein yield, serum iodine, thyroid hormone status, immune response markers, oxidative stress pathways, somatic cell count, calf iodine status, calf IgG absorption and calf health measures.

  • Evidence supports iodine supplementation where iodine supply or status is low, not Premium Iodocow on its own.
  • Responses depend on existing iodine status, pasture iodine, feed type, goitrogenic feeds such as brassicas or canola meal, stage of lactation and pre-calving management.
