Calsea is a highly-effective rumen buffer and great source of calcium and magnesium. The secret is in Calsea’s unique honeycomb structure. Being more porous it has an increased surface area, which increases the bioavailability of minerals and nutrients. Made from calciferous marine algae, Calsea has been proven to stay in the rumen for longer and give buffering protection for up to 8 hours post-feeding, ensuring a stable rumen pH is maintained. It tastes great and its micro prill form means there is zero dust.

Check your cows regularly
Checking your cow’s manure is an easy way to monitor their rumen efficiency. If it contains bits of undigested feed, you know that feed isn’t being broken down efficiently by the rumen. This not only means you’re wasting time and money, it can also signify your cow is suffering.

Why are rumen buffers so important?
The health and efficiency of the rumen directly impacts how well the cow performs through transition, calving, early lactation, and reproduction, as well as how resilient they are when faced with metabolic disease, hoof health, and heat stress.
When the rumen isn’t performing at its best, cows are at higher risk for metabolic disease, uterine infections, mastitis, lameness, reproductive issues, and even spontaneous abortion.
Optimum rumen fermentation is a finely tuned process. Without enough energy in the diet, cows can experience decreased milk production and body condition. Too much energy will produce lactic acid and rumen pH levels will drop, resulting in an increased risk of subacute ruminal acidosis (SARA).
We can effectively manage the rumen by making sure our cows get a balanced feed, however, this is difficult to do. Firstly, feed balance is hard to get right while maintaining a tight feed budget and maximum milk production return. Secondly, pasture composition and quality are constantly changing with the weather.

Important note: Sugar and starch in ryegrasses
Modern, easily-digested ryegrasses have been modified to produce high levels of sugar and starch for high ME value. While these levels are good for pushing production, without enough fibre or an effective rumen buffer, these grasses will cause rumen pH to drop quickly during grazing and rumination.
