Simply, acidosis means the cow’s rumen pH has dropped too low, becoming too acidic. This usually happens when she consumes too much quickly-fermentable feed, like grains or spring pasture, which leads to a build-up of lactic acid in the rumen. The effects can range from mild (sub-acute ruminal acidosis or SARA) to severe (acute acidosis).
Symptoms include reduced appetite, loose manure, lower milk production, and, in severe cases, lameness or even death. Acidosis disrupts rumen function, making it harder for cows to digest fibre and absorb nutrients, impacting their overall health and productivity.
